Most households that are eligible for the Warm Home Discount Scheme as part of the core group don’t need to do anything to be enrolled on to the scheme. If you are eligible, you should be enrolled automatically and you will receive a letter to confirm this. If you have already received the discount, then you could be fine to switch suppliers.
The discount is separate from Cold Weather Payments andWinter Fuel Payments. This means that if you received either of these payments, they were unaffected by the Warm Home Discount. There is no need to apply for the Warm Home Discount anymore - your supplier will automatically apply the discount to your bill if you are eligible.

Discounts for broader group applicants are limited and usually determined on a first-come, first-served basis. With this in mind, it’s a good idea to submit your application form as quickly as possible once the scheme reopens, to improve your chances of benefiting from the discount. If you think you are eligible for the core group but have not received your letter, you can call the Warm Home Discount helpline for support. You usually won’t need to do anything if you qualify, you should automatically be offered the Warm Home Discount Scheme. The Department of Work and Pensions will send a letter to confirm if you’re entitled to the discount.
Applications were processed on a first come, first served basis for the Broader Group and applications have to be made to Bul Energy when the scheme opens each year in autumn. Once it is, customers will be able to apply online or over the phone. If you previously applied under the Broader Group, you'll still need to apply in the same way. The money isn't paid directly to you – it's a one-off discount that's credited to your energy account, prepayment card or key, during the winter – providing you qualify for the payment. The discount is not given directly to you, but applied automatically to your energy bill between October and March. Effectively, the government uses data to tell suppliers which customers to apply the discount to. You can ask for your supplier to apply the discount to your gas bill instead, if you pay for both fuels with them.
But if you're still waiting for it, then there could be complications in switching supplier, and you could risk not receiving your discount. This is where data around floor area, property age and property type is used by the government to identify households that are likely to have high energy costs. Aside from being eligible, you also have to check that your supplier participates in the scheme - we've listed these suppliers below. You must also check that your name (or your partner’s) appear on the electricity bill. You can also get the Warm Home Discount if you're on a prepayment or pay as you go meter. Your supplier will decide how the discount is applied, but it's often in the form of a voucher you can use to top up your meter.
The main focus of the scheme is towards pensioners on low incomes so the core group of people eligible for this discount have to be on pension credit and be getting the guarantee credit element. Rather than receiving £140 as cash, you will either receive the discount directly from your electricity supplier as money off your bill. If you have apre-payment meter, you will receive a voucher you can use to top-up your pre-payment key. However, the Warm Home Discount Scheme is only open for a limited number of broader group customers, and your supplier will have its own eligibility criteria, so you will need to apply for the discount.
As of 2020, this was extended to suppliers with more than 150,000 customers. Some smaller suppliers offer the Warm Home Discount to their customers voluntarily.
